How to tell if it’s a male or female cat? ????<\/h2>\n

When adopt a kitten<\/a> it can sometimes be difficult to recognise whether it’s male or female, especially when it’s your first cat or you don’t have another kitten to compare it to.
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

So how can we decide whether to get a Mia or a Garfield? Here are some tips.
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

Hold the kitten calmly and lift its tail. If it’s very uncomfortable, you can ask someone nearby for help.
\nIf he\/she continues to struggle, try stroking the lower back, above the tail – most cats lift their tails when you do this<\/p>\n

Once the tail is up, you should look at the anus and genitals.<\/p>\n

A male<\/strong> cat will have a greater distance between the anus and the genitals than a female cat (around 1cm in males).
\nIn females<\/strong>, the anus and genitals are very close together. In addition, the opening of the genitals in a male is round, while in a female it is slit-shaped and larger.<\/p>\n

As the males grow, the testicles become visible and occupy the scrotum between the anus and the penis.
\nIn addition, colour can be suggestive of gender, since kittens with tricolours (white, orange and black) or tortoiseshell (black and orange) are almost always (but not always) female, while orange kittens are more often male.<\/p>\n

If you’re in any doubt as to whether it’s a male cat or a female cat, don’t hesitate to contact your veterinary surgeon.<\/p>\n
